Govt told to take action if media houses fail to abide Act
The Development Committee under the Legislature-Parliament has directed the government to take action against the media houses if they fail to implement the Working Journalist Act, 2051
After the discussions with the stakeholders at the Committee's meeting on Tuesday, Committee President Rabindra Adhikari directed the Ministry of Information and Communications to bring the media houses under the ambit of action if they fail to implement the Act and Regulations.
Adhikari added that the real journalists should be provided with identity cards by making a clear standard for the identity of the working journalists.
The Committee has directed the Ministry to submit a report within three months after monitoring whether or not the working journalists were given appointment letter, minimum wages, leave, insurance, medical care, provident fund and other facilities.
During the meeting, Information and Communications Minister Minendra Rijal said that frequent discussions were held with the Federation of Nepali Journalist (FNJ) and other concerned bodies for the implementation of the Act and suggested that a constructive measure should be sought for the implementation of the Act.
Saying that draft of the Media Policy, 2071 is going on, Rijal added that both the journalists and the media houses should exhibit honesty for the implementation of the law.
The parliamentary committee initiated the discussions at the request of the FNJ.
On the occasion, FNJ Chairman Mahendra Bista said that the situation of the implementation of the Act was serious and a qualitative journalism was beyond imagination in absence of better facilities to the journalists.
Chairman of Press Council Nepal Borna Bahadur Karki, Director General of Information Department Laxmi Bilas Koirala, Chairman of Minimum Wages Fixation Committee Khem Bhandari, former chairs of FNJ Suresh Acharya and Shiva Gaunle, Chairman of Press Chautari Nepal Rajendra Aryal, general secretary of Nepal Press Union Ajay Babu Siwakoti, Chairman of Revolutionary Journalist Association Govinda Acharya, advocate Ramesh Badal and others emphasised on the need for implementation of the Act.
