Slim chance of constitution based on consensus: UML
The CPN-UML has said that efforts for a new constitution based on a consensus were still on, despite the minimal possibility for the same.At the UML parliamentary party meeting held at Singha Durbar on Monday, party Chairman KP Oli and other senior leaders shared about the efforts being made to seek a consensus among the parties on the major contents of the forthcoming constitution.
At the meeting, Chairman Oli said that though efforts are being made to promulgate the new constitution on January 22 an analysis of the progress so far shows that the efforts were futile.
Reiterating the fact that absolute consensus was not at all possible, Chairman Oli said efforts, however, will be made for a consensus as much as possible and if not, due process would be followed.
Chairman Oli, on the occasion, expressed the determination to foil efforts made by any force to stop the constitution from being promulgated through the CA, and make sure that the CA is dissolved only after giving the new constitution.
He also made it clear that formation of federal units by dividing the hills and tarai would never be acceptable while urging the UML CA members to not waste their time in caucus and other associations but perform their role as per the party's ideology.
Senior leader Jhalanath Khanal said patriots within and outside the country were exerting pressure for promulgating the new constitution on January 22.
He also said that a federal unit linking the hills and tarai would be practical while pointing out the need to remain alert of those trying to restructure the country based on ethnicity and dividing the tarai and hills.
In case of failure of a consensus, every political party will come forward with their respective proposal, and hence all the CA members should remain united within the party, he added.
Majority of the leaders and CA members speaking at the meeting today stressed on the need to promulgate new constitution on January 22, adopt an inclusive electoral system and make everyone understand that the questions now being raised in the name of Madhes is not in the interest of the local people but just to establish landlordism.
