Janakpur shut down over landfill site row
A joint struggle committee of various political parties called for a shutdown of Janakpur on Monday over the row of construction of landfill site in Phulgama VDC.

The agitators have been staging demonstrations at major thoroughfares in the town. Educations institutions have remained shut and vehicles have not plied the roads.
The ‘save ADB struggle committee’, which has been agitating for the past two months over landfill site row, and the recently formed all-party struggle committee have been jointly agitating for the past two weeks.
Backed by leaders from several political parties, the agitating groups took out torch a rally on Sunday evening. They chanted slogans against Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Bimalendra Nidhi.
The protesters have been demanding the authority construct a landfill site at previously agreed Phulgama VDC. They argue that the new proposed area at Begashivapur is not suitable for the project.
Minister Nidhi had suggested finding an alternative site for the project as the land in Phulgama was already allocated for Rajarshi Janak University.
It is the responsibility of the Janakpur Municipality to find a landfill site as part of the Integrated Urban Development Project worth Rs 2 billion.
The project includes construction of 26 km road, 26 km sewerage and well facilitated landfill site.
