Rashid Khan live in Kathmandu
The eminent Hindustani classical musician will be performing a concert at the Nepal Academy Hall, Kamaladi, on May 23Belonging to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, centred in the North-Uttar Pradesh towns of Rampur and Sahaswan, Khan is the great-grandson of Gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan. The Indian classical musician has been awarded the Padma Bhusan and a GIMA award, and has a handful of music albums to his name. Legendary classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi once stated that Rashid Khan was the "assurance for the future of Indian vocal music".
Apart from his doings in Indian classical music, Khan has also been successful in setting a mark in Indian cinema music. His song Aawoge Jab Tum Saajana from the film Jab We Met received much acclaim. He has also contributed to the original soundtracks for films like My Name is Khan, Mausam and Issaq among others.
Along with the delight that Khan's voice will bring to the audience, the function also bears a social agenda. The programme is being organised in order to celebrate the lives and achievements of some of Nepal's prominent classical musicians. The concert also intends to work as a fund raiser and will help provide scholarships to two orphaned children enrolled at the Sushila Arts Academy, an institute that
aims to hone young talents in the fields of music, dance, art and theatre.
A number of Nepali singers will be accompanying Khan during the musical night. The Ustad will be supported by his team of musicians–Pt Jyoti Goho (Harmonium), Satyajit Talwalkar (Tabala), Murad Ali Khan (Sarangi) and Yashwanth Golcha (Vocal Support)–during his performance in Kathmandu.
